Justin Maxwell Called Up by Nationals

Sept. 4, 2007

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Former Maryland outfielder Justin Maxwell was promoted to the Washington Nationals from Class Single-A Potomac today and is expected to be in uniform when Washington hosts the Florida Marlins tonight at 7:05 p.m.

Maxwell, who graduated from Maryland in 2005, hit .281 with 27 home runs, 83 RBIs and 35 stolen bases splitting time between Hagerstown and Potomac before being called up.

Maxwell's last two seasons in College Park were marred by injuries, but he still finished his collegiate career with a .299 average, 16 home runs, 71 RBIs and 24 stolen bases while playing a stellar defensive outfield. In his final healthy season as a Terp in 2003, Maxwell hit .317 with 10 home runs, 11 steals and 43 RBIs in 55 games.

Beyond his playing abilities, Maxwell was also a standout in the classroom. Maxwell graduated with a degree in animal science and was named an Arthur Ashe Jr. Scholar by Black Issues in Higher Education in 2003.
