
Terps Complete Day 1 in Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The University of Maryland men's swimming and diving program completed their first day of competition at the University of Pittsburgh. The Terps faced Villanova, Missouri, Penn State and the Panthers.
The Terrapins had an impressive showing in the 100-yard butterfly, with three members finishing in the top-ten. Nick Cordes (50.79) led the Terps, placing fourth, while Captain Eric Thomasson (51.60) placed fifth. Aleksandar Damjanic also swam for the Terps, placing eighth with a time of 51.75.
Maryland also had three top-ten finishes in the 100-yard breaststroke. Eric Cullen (58.82) placed fourth, while Haywood Miller (59.89) took seventh and John Closs (1:00.53) took the last spot.
Chris Rouchard and Captain Ken Golaszewski saw two top ten finishes in the 1650-yard freestyle. Rouchard placed sixth with a final time of 16:23.18, while Golaszewski came in seventh with a time of 16:44.36.
Chris Sanford, Cullen, Damjanic and Andy Dilz finished third in the 200-yard medley relay. Sanford swam a 24.44 in the first leg, while the team finished with a time of 1:33.85.
Myles Poster, Brian Honore, Eric Moore and Andy Mears also competed in the 200-yard medley relay, finishing sixth with a time of 1:36.10.
In the 100-yard backstroke, Dong Kim placed second of 14 with a time of 51.04. Sanford (51.80) placed sixth while Mitch Challacombe (52.62) took eighth.
Cordes and Kim finished second and third place in the 100-yard freestyle, swimming a 46.40 and a 46.49, respectively. Dilz also competed in the 400-yard individual medley, placing third with a time of 4:03.81.
In the 3-meter diving competition, Derek Hock placed seventh of 13 with a final score of 247.20.
The Terps will continue competition all day Saturday in Pittsburgh.
