COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The relay squads for the Maryland swimming and diving program took the spotlight Thursday, sweeping all four races in the opening day of the 2008 Terrapin Cup Invitational at the Eppley Recreation Natatorium.
The women's 200 free relay, consisting of Yelena Skalinskaya, Annie Fittin, Jackie Davidson, and Jen Vogel took first early in the evening (1:33.22) while the men's edition (Mitch Challacombe, Andy Dilz, Ryan Greene, and John Closs) captured first (1:21.64) immediately following. Maryland closed the night cap with a pair of wins in the 400 medley relay.
Individually, the Terps put up some season- and career-best times. Brian Honore finished second in the 500 free (4:28.58) while freshman Ginny Glover took third (4:55.41) on the women's front. Vogel continues to have a stellar season in the pool for the Terps, finishing second in the 200 IM (2:03.60). Freshman Andrew Relihan placed third (1:52.56) for Maryland in the same event. Skalinskaya and Dilz notched lifetime bests in a second-place (23.23) and first-place (20.37) in the 50 free, respectively. Challacombe registered a career-best in the 50 free (20.67) for a top-three finish as well.
Freshman Alisa Kurbatova and sophomore Montana Puente led the Terps on the board, placing second and 12th, respectively, in 1-meter diving.
"To have some personal and season bests in mid-November not shaved and rested is a great thing," head coach Sean Schimmel said. "We saw people improve from the morning races to the evening races which I am very happy with."
