
Terps Move Into Eighth After Day 3 in Atlanta

ATLANTA, Ga. - University of Maryland freshman Annie Fittin and sophomore Jen Vogel each lived up to advanced seeding during their events Friday in the third day of the 2008 Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Swimming & Diving Championships being hosted by Georgia Tech.
As a team, Maryland was in eighth place heading into the final day with 156.5 points. Virginia is well on its way to another team championship, posting 546 points to outdistance North Carolina, with 378. Maryland is 25 points behind Georgia Tech for seventh.
Fittin placed fourth in the 100-yard backstroke after coming into the event as the fifth seed. She swam a season-best 55.07 for a B-cut to the NCAA Nationals to be held next month and the fastest time at Maryland since 2006. Fittin, Jackie Davidson (12th, career-best 56.47) and Patty DeScenza (15th, career-best 56.58 in prelims) scored 22 points for the Terps in that event, their best in an individual event at the championships.
Vogel was seeded seventh in the 100 butterfly and moved up one spot to finish sixth in a career-best and B-cut time of 54.81, the Terps' best mark since 2005. DeScenza also had a 12th-place finish (career-best 55.67 in prelims), while Jessalyn Crawford had a season-best 59.07 in prelims.
The Terps earned a sixth-place finish in the 400 medley relay in a season-best 3:45.23, earning 26 points.
Nina Rossi picked up points for Maryland with a 14th-place finish in the 400 individual medley, going 4:27.83.
Kathryn Snedeker cut three seconds off her sesaon-best and earned a second swim with her prelim time of 1:50.63 in the 200 freestyle, the best time by a Terp this season. She came back in the evening session to finish 19th.
The final day of the ACC Championships resumes Saturday, Feb. 23, with preliminaries beginning at 11 a.m. and finals starting at 7 p.m. In addition, platform diving will be conducted for the first time in ACC history.
