
Terps Finish Ninth at 2008 ACC Championships

ATLANTA, Ga. - The women's swimming and diving team finished ninth with a final point total of 223.5 in the 2008 ACC Championships hosted by Georgia Institute of Technology.
The Cavaliers captured their sixth title, compiling 800 points over the four-day meet. UNC finished second with a total of 572, while Florida State rounded out the top three with 362 points.
Jackie Davidson began the preliminaries with a twelfth place qualifying time of 2:03.22 in the 200-yard backstroke. Erin Holmes also qualified in the event with a time of 2:04.51, finishing 19th.
The Terps had four qualify for the 100-yard freestyle. Captain Emily Smoak qualified for the 100-yard freestyle with an NCAA-B cut time of 50.79, finishing 13th in the event, while Annie Fittin, Kathryn Snedeker and Maya Finkler finished 18th, 19th and 22nd.
Casey Albert qualified in the 200-yard breaststroke in 24th place with a time of 2:28.90. Vogel and Rossi qualified in the 200-yard IM, finishing 12th and 16th with times of 2:04.44 and 2:05.16, respectively.
Maryland had an impressive finish in the preliminaries of the 200-yard butterfly. Nina Rossi finished sixth with a NCAA-B qualifying time of 2:01.50. Jen Vogel finished two spots back in eighth, also with an NCAA-B cut time of 2:02.00. Patty DeScenza rounded out the top ten, also boasting an NCAA-B cut time of 2:02.34.
After the qualifying round, the women opened the final day of competition with a ninth place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. Fittin, Smoak, Cross and Yelena Skalinskaya scored 18 points for the Terps with a time of 1:43.99.
The Terps scored their highest point total in the 800-yard freestyle relay. Finkler, Davidson, Rossi and Snedeker finished fourth in the event with a time of 7:19.97 to add 30 points for the Terrapins.
Vogel became Maryland's predominate point scorer, added 39 points to the Terrapin's total in just two events. Vogel, along with Fittin, Smoak and Davidson, finished sixth in the 400-yard medley relay, scoring 26 points. Vogel then scored 13 points for the Terps with a sixth place finish in the 100-yard butterfly with an NCAA-B cut time of 54.81.
Fittin finished fourth in the 100-yard backstroke with an NCAA-B cut time of 55.07, scoring 15 points. Davidson and DeScenza finished 12th and 15th, adding seven points for the Terps.
Fittin, Skalinskaya, Smoak and Davidson added 26 points to the Terps final score, finishing sixth in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:32.13.
Rossi and Skalinskaya also contributed to the Terps' point total. Rossi finished in 14th place in the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:27.83, scoring three points for the Terrapins while Skalinskaya scored 1.5 points with a time of 23.52 in the 50-yard freestyle.
Up next is the ACC Men's Swimming Championship, which takes place Wednesday-Saturday, February 27-March 1. Georgia Tech plays host for the second straight week at the Aquatic Center.
