The University of Maryland women's tennis team was unable to keep the momentum going from last weekend's matches, losing its Atlantic Coast Conference opener Wednesday afternoon to No. 9 Duke, 7-0.
After barely losing (4-3) to No. 56 Penn Saturday and defeating Old Dominion 5-2 Sunday, the Terps (2-6, 0-1) struggled with the Blue Devils (6-1), who have beaten three top-25 teams this season.
Maryland played the doubles point tough, but eventually relinquished it as Amanda Granson and Melissa Mang, the No. 6-ranked duo in the nation, dispatched of Michal Amir and Lisa Miller 8-5 at the No. 1 position.
That victory clinched the doubles point and gave the Blue Devils an early 1-0 lead. Duke, which possesses two of the top 20 singles players in the nation, rolled from there.
Mang's victory over Maggie MacKeever at No. 4 singles clinched the match. MacKeever battled back from a 5-2 deficit in the first set to knot it at 5-all. But Mang won the final two games and took the second set 6-0.
Maryland's Eleanor Peters looked sharp in the early going of her match with Granson. Peters, playing at No. 5 singles, lost the first set 7-5 before being forced to retire in the second set down 3-0.
Duke's Ellah Nze, the 16th-ranked singles player in the nation, handled Karin Lundmark at No. 2 singles, defeating the freshman 6-1, 6-2.
Reka Zsilinszka, who is currently No. 13 in the ITA singles rankings, dispatched of freshman Julia Huschke 6-0, 6-1.
Maryland is back in action at 10 a.m. Saturday when the Terps are scheduled to complete their four-match homestand against Miami (Ohio) in the Tennis Center at College Park.
