No. 5 Women's Lacrosse Topples No. 2 Virginia, 8-5

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Senior Allie Buote was credited with 10 saves and classmate Dana Dobbie recorded three goals, an assist, and six draw controls as the No. 5 Maryland women's lacrosse team beat No. 2 Virginia, 8-5, on March 4 at the Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex.

The Terps, now in their second season under the guidance of Cathy Reese, have won all three games in which they have played an opponent ranked No. 1 or No. 2 at home in the past two seasons and have done it in three different locations. Last season, Maryland defeated No. 2 Duke, 19-18, on March 3 at Ludwig Field and then knocked off No. 1 North Carolina three weeks later at Chevy Chase Bank Field at Byrd Stadium, 8-6.

Dobbie snatched up six of the Terps' 11 draw controls on the night while Virginia had just four. Senior Lauren Cohen recorded two goals and an assist while classmate Katie Pumphrey notched four ground balls and three caused turnovers on the defensive end.

The Terps jumped right out of the gate and scored 30 seconds in as senior Kelly Kasper won the game's first draw and then sophomore Caitlyn McFadden found the back of the net to put Maryland on top. Dobbie won the ensuing draw and Maryland was deliberate on the offensive end, found its shot, and scored as senior Katie Princiotto hit an open Dobbie to put the Terps up two.

Buote came up with her first save at the 26:32 mark as she stopped a Megan O'Malley free-position shot and the Terps held off the Virginia attack for another four minutes. The teams traded possessions for about 10 minutes as neither side could find its rhythm offensively, but the Terps finally broke through at the 13:49 point in the half.

Kasper was in front of the cage on the left side making a move and tried to squeeze a pass in to Dobbie. The Cavalier defense deflected the ball down, but Dobbie was able to scoop up the loose ball and beat Kendall McBrearty to give the Terps a 3-0 cushion.

Kaitlin Duff won the next draw but Buote stopped another O'Malley shot and the Terps cleared quickly. Dobbie then found senior Casey Magor on the run and she put the Terps up four with 12:12 left in the half.

Virginia finally broke through, scoring its first goal with 5:26 left in the first half as Brittany Kalkstein found the net off of a pass from Ashley McCulloch.

The Cavaliers did not waste much time getting its second goal as they forced a turnover in the midfield and got on the fast break. McCulloch went one-on-one with Buote and cut the lead in half just 31 seconds later. The two teams would go into the break with the Terps leading 4-2.

Once again, Dobbie set up a quick goal after the opening draw. After winning the ball, she lost control and a scramble for the loose ball followed. Cohen picked it up and found some open turf in front of her, made the most of it, and put Maryland up 5-2.

Cohen then added her second goal of the game a little over a minute later as she made some great moves down the middle of the Virginia defense to get open and score to make it 6-2.

Virginia stayed close though and scored the next two goals to cut the deficit to 6-4 with 16:09 to play. Kaitlin Duff scored both times for the Cavaliers as McCulloch and O'Malley picked up the assists.

The Cavaliers had two chances at goal to pull within one but failed to score. Buote made a save on a shot by Blair Weymouth and then O'Malley nailed the crossbar on a free position. After McCulloch turned the ball over, Kasper brought the possession into the offensive third. She swung around behind the cage and found Dobbie on the left side who fired a shot past McBrearty to push the lead to 7-4 with 10:02 remaining.

Virginia got the goal back in 1:03 seconds as they hounded Kasper and forced her to turn it over after securing the draw. The Cavaliers immediately turned that into a goal as O'Malley scored on the breakaway.

Dobbie won the next draw and the Terps killed off almost five minutes before the Cavalier defense forced a turnover. UVA cleared it into its offensive third but sophomore Karissa Taylor drew a charge from Weymouth with 3:16 on the clock to regain possession for the Terps.

Maryland then killed off 84 more seconds before sophomore Amanda Spinnenweber took a crack at an open goal, but McBrearty made it back in time and got the save. She then set up a good clear for the Cavaliers but Buote made a save on a Whitaker Hagerman shot with 1:23 left.

The Terps scored their final goal on an open net as Spinnenweber capitalized when Cohen found her from behind the cage.

McCulloch led Virginia (3-1, 1-1 ACC) with a goal and two assists while Duff added a pair of goals. O'Malley recorded a goal and a helper.

The Terps (3-1, 2-1 ACC) return to action on Saturday when they host No. 12 James Madison at noon at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.
