COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Friday's baseball game between the University of Maryland and No. 8 Florida State, scheduled in Tallahassee, has been postponed due to rain. The game will be made up at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 8, before the teams' regularly scheduled game Saturday at 6 p.m. The three-game series is the first in Atlantic Coast Conference play for each school.
The Terps (5-4) have won four of their last five games after a 1-3 start, including a 12-2 win Wednesday against Coppin State. Florida State, which is ranked eighth in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll and Collegiate Baseball Poll, is a perfect 9-0 this season. The Seminoles are the favorite to win the Atlantic Division, according to the ACC's Preseason Poll.
The Terps have four starters hitting over .400 and are batting .326 as a team through nine games. Florida State is hitting .364 as a team and has hit 17 home runs.
Florida State is led by reigning ACC Player of the Week Dennis Guinn, who is hitting .469 with team highs in home runs (four) and RBIs (14). The Seminoles also boast Johnny Bench Award candidate Buster Posey behind the plate. Posey was a First-Team All-American a season ago.
In Friday's opener, the Terps will have Scott Swinson (Ellicott City, Md./George Washington University) on the mound to face Elih Villanueva. Senior Kevin Biringer (Albuquerque, N.M./Bradley University) will move into the No. 2 starter role Saturday against Seminole southpaw Matt Fairel. Jensen Pupa (Germantown, Md./Montgomery College) will toe the rubber for the Terps Sunday and will face Ryan Strauss.
The Terrapin bats will face their toughest opposition of the season in Tallahassee. Florida State's pitching staff is holding opposing hitters to a .223 batting average to the tune of a collective 3.08 ERA.
Maryland is looking for its first win against a nationally-ranked team since beating then-No. 6 Clemson last March 24.
Florida State has won 29 straight games in the series, dating back to 1998. Maryland head coach Terry Rupp is looking for his first win against the Seminoles.
All three games can be heard live online at wmucsports.com. Sunday's game will be broadcast live on ACCSelect.
