TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The University of Maryland baseball team lost both games of a doubleheader at No. 8 Florida State Saturday.
The Terps (5-6, 0-2) fell behind 5-0 in the first four innings of the first game before battling back and giving themselves a chance to win.
Freshman Bill Rice (Washington Township, N.J./Washington Township) put Maryland on the board in the top of the fifth inning with a two-out, two-run single to left field.
The Seminoles (11-0, 2-0) held on to their 5-2 lead heading into the ninth inning. The Terps did not go quietly, however. Mike Murphy (Silver Spring, Md./Georgetown Prep) singled with one out. Murphy then scored on a three-base error by Florida State left fielder Ohmed Danesh. Representing the tying run, junior Will Greenberg (Gaithersburg, Md./Washington College) scored Jensen Pupa (Germantown, Md./Northwest) with a sacrifice fly. The Terps could get no closer, as Seminole starter Elih Villanueve finished off a complete-game, 5-4 victory.
Sophomore Scott Swinson (Ellicott City, Md./George Washington University) took the loss for the Terps, allowing five earned runs in 5 2/3 innings pitched to fall to 1-2 on the season.
Senior Chad Durakis (Cockeysville, Md.) had a hit in the first game to extend his hitting streak to 10, but did not get a hit in the second game.
Terps starter Kevin Biringer (Albuquerque, N.M./Bradley University) struggled in game two, allowing five runs in 2/3 of an inning as the Seminoles cruised to a 16-0 victory to remain unbeaten on the season.
Maryland will try to salvage the third and final game of the series at noon tomorrow with Pupa taking the mound. Live video of the game will be broadcast online at ACCSelect.com. WMUCSports.com will carry audio of the game online, as well.
