The Maryland women's water polo team exploded in its second game against George Washington this season, defeating the Colonials, 17-6, Wednesday at the Eppley Recreation Center Natatorium in College Park.
The Terps (19-11, 2-2) made it six straight wins over the Colonials (7-16, 0-4) with an overpowering offensive display. Maryland scored six goals in the first period and held a 10-3 lead at the half to get its second conference win of the season. Both of the Terps' wins in the CWPA South have come over George Washington.
Rachel Jordan, Maggie Eicks and Christen Vagts each scored three goals in the game. This was the sixth time this season Jordan has scored three or more goals in a game, tying her for the team high. Eicks, only a freshman, now has 33 goals on the season, placing her fourth on the team.
Colleen Shaw and Jill Lau also made big contributions, scoring a pair of goals each. This was Lau's first multi-goal game of the season. Nine different Terps scored in the game.
Maryland was also helped by stout defense by its goalkeepers, Ashleigh Jobson and Anna Gossett, who split time between the posts.
The Terps will face conference opponent Princeton at home Saturday at 11:30 a.m., and the Wolverines of Michigan at 6 p.m. Sunday the Terrapins close out the regular season in College Park against Bucknell. The Terps fell to all three teams earlier this season, but look to turn the tables on their opponents this weekend at the Eppley Recreation Center Natatorium.
