COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Will Greenberg delivered a career-high four hits and Mike Murphy went 3-for-5 with three RBIs, but the University of Maryland baseball team lost to the 19th-ranked Virginia Cavaliers, 11-6, at Shipley Field Friday night.
The Terps (20-15, 5-11 ACC) led by as many four runs and held a two-run advantage after seven innings, but the Cavaliers (27-9, 9-7 ACC) erupted for six runs in the eighth en route to the come-from-behind win.
The Terps scored six runs against Virginia All-American pitcher Jacob Thompson, including one in the bottom of the first on a Murphy (Silver Spring, Md./Georgetown Prep) RBI single.
After falling behind 2-1 in the top of the third, the Terps answered with three in the bottom half of the inning. Murphy was again responsible for the damage, lacing a two-run double down the left field line. Gerry Spessard (Hagerstown, Md./Smithsburg) added an RBI single in the inning.
Maryland increased its lead to 6-2 in the bottom of the fourth on RBI singles by Greenberg (Gaithersburg, Md./Washington College) and Joe Palumbo (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic).
Scott Swinson (Ellicott City, Md./George Washington University) pitched seven strong innings and came out to start the eighth with a 6-4 lead. However, a single and double put runners at second and third with one out and Swinson was relieved by senior Brad Taylor (Silver Spring, Md./Good Counsel). Taylor faced two batters and allowed an RBI single to Jeremy Farrell and walked a batter as the Cavs tied the game at 6-6.
Freshman Matt Quinn (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) came in for Taylor, but three of the four hitters he faced reached safely.
Virginia scored six runs on six hits and took advantage of one Maryland error.
The Cavaliers added another run in the top of the ninth.
Taylor took the loss for the Terps, falling to 1-3 on the season. Virginia's Neal Davis earned the victory, throwing three shutout innings.
The Terps and Cavaliers play again at 4 p.m. Saturday. Mike Sufczynski (Darnestown, Md./St. John's) will get the start for the Terps.
