Baseball Drops Series Finale to No. 19 Virginia

April 13, 2008

Box Score

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland baseball team lost to the No. 19 Virginia Cavaliers, 11-4, Sunday afternoon in the series finale at Shipley Field, giving Virginia a three-game sweep.

Virginia (29-9, 11-7 ACC) plated single runs in the first, second and fourth innings to grab a 3-0 lead as starting pitcher Andrew Carraway retired the first 10 Terrapin hitters he faced.

The Terps (20-17, 5-13 ACC) came within feet of knotting the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth. With runners at first and second and one out, third baseman Mike Murphy (Silver Spring, Md./Georgetown Prep) hit a deep fly ball to right-center field. The ball hit off the netting above the outfield wall, feet shy of a game-tying home run. However, no runs scored on the play due to confusion on the base paths and Murphy was held to a long single.

Gerry Spessard (Hagerstown, Md./Smithsburg) drove in one run with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-1, but the Terps could not push across any more runs in the inning.

Virginia opened the game up in the ensuing half inning, scoring five times in the top of the fifth on six singles.

The Cavs led by as many as 10 runs at 11-1 before the Terps had their best offensive inning, scoring three times in the bottom of the eighth. Spessard drove in one run with a double to center, Will Greenberg (Gaithersburg, Md./Washington College) had an RBI groundout and Chad Durakis (Cockeysville, Md./St. Paul's) delivered an RBI single.

Senior Kevin Biringer (Albuquerque, N.M./Bradley University) started for Maryland and allowed eight earned runs on 10 hits with six strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings of work. Biringer fell to 3-2. Carraway got the win for Virginia, allowing one run in seven innings with nine strikeouts.

The Cavaliers hit three home runs. Tyler Cannon and Dan Grovatt hit solo shots and David Adams added a two-run homer.

Durakis went 3-for-4 at the plate for Maryland while Jensen Pupa (Germantown, Md./Northwest) and Bill Rice (Washington Township, N.J./Washington Township) each had two hits.

The Terps travel to UMBC Tuesday night before returning home Wednesday for a matchup with Maryland-Eastern Shore.
