COLLEGE PARK, Md. - University of Maryland men's basketball coach Gary Williams announced Wednesday (April 16) that Tyree Evans (Richmond, Va./Motlow State CC) has signed a National Letter of Intent with the Terrapins. Evans, a 6-foot-3 shooting guard, will be available for the 2008-09 season and will have two years of eligibility with Maryland.
Evans spent this past season with Motlow State (Tenn.) Community College where he helped the Bucks post a 28-5 record and a runner-up finish in District VII of the Tennessee Junior and Community College Athletic Association. Evans averaged 21.1 points, 5.1 rebounds, 2.1 steals and 2.0 assists per game. He connected on 44 percent of his three-point shots and shot 84 percent from the free throw line.
"Tyree has worked hard to get himself in position to play at the Division I level," said head coach Gary Williams. "He is an outstanding shooter with great quickness and will be a great complement to the players already in our program."
A native of Richmond, Va., Evans was named 2007-08 TJCCAA Men's Basketball Co-Player of the Year. He was an All-TJCCAA first-team selection and was named to the 2008 TJCCAA Region VII All-Tournament Team. Evans was ranked as the sixth-best junior college player in the country for 2007-08 by Rivals.com.
During the 2006-07 season, Evans played for Butler County Community College where he averaged 19.0 points per game. A former high school All-American, Evans finished his prep career as Virginia's class AAA all-time leading scorer with 2,251 points. As a senior he scored 884 points, the third-highest single-season total behind NBA stalwarts Allen Iverson and Moses Malone.
Evans joins two other student-athletes who signed with Maryland during the fall. Sean Mosley (Baltimore, Md./St. Frances Academy) and Augustus Gilchrist (Temple Hills, Md./Progressive Christian) each signed with Maryland during the early signing period in November.
