COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Junior Sarah Dooley pitched a one-hitter as the University of Maryland softball team defeated Delaware State, 2-0, on Wednesday afternoon. In the second game, senior Sarde Stewart hit a three-run home run and sophomore Lindsey Wright pitched a three-hit complete game as the Terps completed the sweep, 4-1. Maryland improved to 25-9 on the season.
In the first game, Dooley (11-7) struck out seven batters with no walks while only allowing one hit, in the third inning. The Hornets did not advance a runner past second base.
In the third inning, Kerry Hickey singled home Krista Gould and Jenny Belak with two outs to give the Terps a 2-0 lead. Hickey now has 26 RBI on the season to lead the Terps.
Delaware State starter Brittney Ruark (6-8) limited the Terps to just two singles, Hickey's in the third and one to Breanna Shaw in the sixth.
In the second game, Belak singled and stole second in the third inning before Hickey walked to give the Terps runners at first and second with one down. Senior Sarde Stewart stepped up and hit a monster shot over the left field fence for her team-leading fifth home run of the season.
Belak moved in third place all-time in school history with 198 hits, when she beat out a slow grounder to shortstop in the fifth. She then stole her second base of the game and the 50th of her career, most in Maryland history.
In the sixth inning, Shaw singled and scored on a Julie Lofland single to finish the scoring for the Terps. The Hornets' only run in the game came on a Jessica Chrabaszcz RBI single in the seventh inning.
Maryland starter Lindsey Wright (1-0) allowed only three hits for her first complete game of the season and first of her Maryland career. Hornet starter Megan Lambertz took the loss to move to 3-3, pitching a complete game with four earned runs and one strikeout.
Maryland returns to ACC action Saturday, as they play host to Florida State in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
