COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland gymnastics team won the President's Cup Team GPA Award for the highest cumulative average over the past two semesters last Sunday at the 12th annual President's Cup Brunch.
University President Dr. C.D. Mote Jr. was on hand to present the team GPA awards. Gymnastics won for the fourth straight year and the eighth time in the 12-year history of the award. The team's GPA was 3.33.
"The competition for the President's Cup Award has become increasingly more intense as teams stress the need for stronger academics. I am very pleased that our athletic department recognizes and applauds the academic achievements of our teams," said head coach Bob Nelligan.
"Everyone knows the importance of competition, but many are unaware of how much hard work and pressure there is to produce academically as well. This award starts off every season for the team; our athletes are preparing right now to defend the challenge and are working hard to maintain this very prestigious award."
Senior Gretchen Kittelberger won the team's Academic Achievement Award, which is given to the junior or senior with the highest cumulative GPA (minimum 3.0).
"Gretchen's outstanding academic achievements have followed her throughout her career," said Nelligan. "Not only has she been able to maintain a perfect 4.0 but was also gifted enough to graduate in three years. Her academic excellence is the standard that all our gymnasts strive to attain, and she certainly represents the true meaning of `student-athlete.' "
The team's previous GPAs were:
2007 - 3.42
2006 - 3.30
2005 - 3.23
2004 - 3.32
2003 - 3.29
2002 - 3.23
