COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Senior midfielders Dana Dobbie and Kelly Kasper have been named finalists for the Tewaaraton Trophy, announced May 6 by the Tewaaraton Award Foundation. This marks the first time since 2001 that the Terrapins have had two finalists for the award in the same season, given annually to the best collegiate lacrosse player in the country.
Kasper is the fifth individual from Maryland to be a finalist for the Tewaaraton. Dobbie was a finalist last season and is just the second two-time finalist ever at Maryland. Kelly Coppedge was a finalist back in 2003 and 2004. Quinn Carney and associate head coach Jen Adams were both finalists in 2001, when Adams was the recipient of the first Tewaaraton as a senior.
Christy Finch and Hannah Nielson from Northwestern and Katie Rowan from Syracuse are the other three finalists for the award.
Dobbie was a finalist for the Tewaaraton Trophy in 2007. She leads the country this season in draw controls with 114 which is a new NCAA single-season record and she averages 6.00 per outing. The Guelph, Ontario product leads the Atlantic Coast Conference in goals (66), goals per game (3.47), and draw controls. She is also second in points per game (4.11) behind Kasper. Her goals and goals per game numbers rank fourth and 13th in the country, respectively.
Dobbie now has 322 draw controls in her four years which is also an NCAA record. Her 66 goals this season is the sixth-most ever in a single season at Maryland. She also leads the team with 30 caused turnovers and is second with 30 ground balls. She has 14 hat tricks to her name this year in 19 games and has had 12 games with five or more draw controls.
Dobbie was a three-time ACC Player of the Week which led the conference and was named to the All-ACC team for the second-straight season.
Kasper, who is already a two-time All-American, leads the Terps with 81 points on 41 goals and 40 assists. Her 40 assists this year rank seventh all-time at Maryland in a single season. She is also second on the team with 49 draw controls and 26 caused turnovers. Kasper has had 11 games this season with five or more points and 12 games with multiple assists, including her last six outings.
She leads the ACC in assists (40), assists per game (2.11), points (81), and points per game (4.26). Her assists and assists per game numbers rank seventh and 11th in the nation, respectively, while her points total ranks 10th.
Kasper has been named ACC and Inside Lacrosse Player of the Week this season and is a two-time recipient of the Player of the Week award from WomensLax.com.
The Tewaaraton Trophy will be announced at the annual award presentation on May 29 at the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C.
