Sept. 4, 2008
COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The University of Maryland softball team will hold open walk-on tryouts for new players on Friday, Sept. 19. The tryouts, which originally were scheduled for Sept. 5, will begin at 3:30 p.m. in Robert E. Taylor Stadium, and be used to round out the roster heading into the 2009 season.
Last season saw two players from the spring 2008 tryouts receive playing time for the Terps, who finished 36-23 and posted the third-most wins in school history.
Sophomore Carolyn Desrochers played outfield and catcher, hitting an RBI sacrifice fly in her first-ever plate appearance against George Washington April 23. Fellow sophomore Lauren Ghent, an outfielder, served as a key pinch runner late in the season, scoring three runs in 14 appearances, while making two starts in left field.
Both Desrochers and Ghent had very positive experiences trying out for the Terps and found their new teammates to be extremely welcoming and accommodating.
"All of the girls were really friendly and helped us out in any way possible," Desrochers said. "To get to know and become a part of the team earlier will make it so much easier when the season comes around in the spring."
Added Ghent: "Being able to get acclimated to the lifting and workout schedule in the fall will make you a better player."
