The University of Maryland will once again serve as host to its annual Maryland Invitational indoor track and field meet this Saturday, Jan. 17 at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex in Landover, Md.
Field events will begin at 10 a.m. with the men's weight throw, with running events scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. with the women's distance medley relay. Competition is scheduled through the men's 4x400 relay at 5:05 p.m.
The Terrapins will be competing in their second meet of the indoor season and will be coming off a strong showing by both the men and women in last week's season-opener at Virginia Tech. There were 9 ECAC/IC4A qualifiers in addition to the men's and women's 4x400m relay teams. Many athletes also made new marks Maryland's top ten all-time list.
That group of stellar athletes were led by Dwight Barbiasz and Ashley Williams. Competing in his first meet as a Terp, Barbiasz had an outstanding performance in the men's high jump. The freshman jumped 7'0.25" to hit the NCAA provisional qualifying standard and that placed him as #7 on Maryland's all-time list. Williams' mark of 18.57 (60'11.25") in the weight throw was a personal best by 15 feet. The mark moved her to the #2 position on Maryland's All-Time list.
Junior middle distance runner Christina Nelson won the mile event with a time of 5:01.96 which was her indoor best as a collegiate athlete.
Juniors Jeremy Samuels and Tommy Friscia also took the top spot in their respective events. Samuels won the open 400m with a time of 48.69 and came back shortly after to run a 49.10 anchor split on the 4x400m relay, while Friscia opened up well to win the 800m with a time of 1:55.63 and competed in the 4x400m relay as well.
Also in the field of 35 collegiate teams scheduled to appear are area schools such as American, Bowie State, Catholic, Georgetown, Howard, Navy, Towson and Virginia. "We look forward to hosting some great competition from local schools as well as other Universities (St. Augustine from NC) that have decided to join us on the new mondo track facility at the PG center," said Coach Andrew Valmon, "This is a fast track after the resurfacing, and we'll hopefully post some impressive times this weekend."
