University of Maryland freshman Dwight Barbiasz topped last week's IC4A qualifying mark of 7-00.25 in the high jump with a NCAA qualifying mark of 7-01.75 that placed him first in the event. The Terps dominated with five event victories Saturday at the Maryland Indoor Invitational track and field meet held at the Wayne Curry Sports and Learning Center.
Competing in his second meet as a Terrapin, Barbiasz has dominated in the men's high jump by finishing ahead of the pack in each instance. His winning effort in the event was followed by senior David Edwards-Brennan who placed fourth with a NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 6-08.00.
Zach Ray finished third in the 60 meter hurdles in 8.15 just ahead of Legonn Haskins at fourth in 8.23. Ray also placed third in the men's long jump with a mark of 23-8.00. With the same mark, Json Allen followed at fourth. Former Terp and All-American Dominic Berger finished first in the event with 7.97.
In the shot put, Ashley Williams, whose 46-4.75 moved her into sixth place on Maryland's all-time list at last years Maryland Invitational, was first with 48-2.50. Williams' win was one of the highlights on the women's side as she won by nearly 6 feet and established a personal best. Kristen Batts came in tenth at 34-4.50, Tara Milezewski followed at twelfth place at 32-5.00 while Alexandra Georgiou placed fifteenth at 30-2.25. Williams also won and posted a personal best of 17.10m in the weight throw.
Also improving from last weeks' performance, freshman Ashley Hendrix dominated the women's long jump with a mark of 18-4.50 placing her at top spot ahead of Kiani Profit at second with a mark of 18-4.50. Junior Ashley Carbray jumped 18-01.00 to place fifth ahead of Chanel Williams with the same mark at sixth, and Katie Rogus rounded out the group with a mark of 17-00.50 to place eleventh.
Chanel Williams finished first posting an ECAC qualifying time of 8.69 in the 60 meter hurdles preliminaries followed by a 8.97 time that placed Kiani Profit at fourth place. In the finals, Williams finished second in 8.73 while Profit placed fourth with 8.79.
Maryland's women's distance medley relay earned an ECAC qualifying win early in the day. Erin Matyus, Heidi Paul, DeAnna Brown and Kristin Reed covered the distance in 12:03.28. Alexis Booker led the Terps in the 60 meter dash placing third in 7.72 just ahead of freshman D'Ambour Lewis who placed fourth in 7.73. Heidi Paul finished tenth in 7.94 with DeAnna Brown following twelfth and Brittany Lee-Richardson placing fifteenth.
Junior Christina Nelson who found success in the mile at last weeks Virginia State Invitational led the Terps in the 800 meter run that moved her into the #9 spot on Maryland's all-time list.She placed second in 2:16.47 ahead of Nicole Banker at seventh place with 2:25.34, Natalie Goodman in the twelfth spot in 2:26, and Owoade Ayorinde placing fourteenth with a time of 2:27.03.
MARYLAND NOTES
Kiani Profit posted a mark of 5-6.00 placing her second in the high jump, just an inch shy of an ECAC qualifying mark. She proceeded freshman Camille Nichols at seventh place with a mark of 4-11.75. This was Nichols' first event of the season.
The Terps' women 4x400 meter relay placed third with a time 4:02.36.
Senior Josh Davis placed fourth in the Men's 800 meter run in 1:57.45, while junior Johnny Shuping of Saint Augustine won the event in 1:55.41.
Floyd Hawkes had a strong double. He ran 22.66 in the 200m dash to place #10 on Maryland's all-time list. He also competed well in the 60m dash with a time of 7.21.
