Maryland Women's Swimming and Diving Knocks off Richmond and Miami

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women's swimming and diving team picked up another pair of wins and a stable of solid performances Saturday when it upended Richmond and Miami at the Eppley Recreation Natatorium.
The Terps moved to 9-3 on the year after dropping Miami, 183-104, in Atlantic Coast Conference action before narrowly edging Richmond, 149-144. In a tight race with the Spiders, the 200 free relay helped Maryland to the top, winning the event courtesy of a 1:34.03 first-place finish from the team of Yelena Skalinskaya, Annie Fittin, Ginny Glover and Jackie Davidson.
A mix of youth and experience led the way for the Terps on the day as freshmen Ginny Glover, Meggie Schmidt and Alisa Kurbatova all registered solid showings for Maryland. Glover captured the 200 free (1:50.29) and the 500 free (4:55.62) while Schimdt picked up a lifetime best in the 200 fly (2:03.35) en route to a second-place finish. Kurbatova picked up another sweep on the boards, winning both the 1-meter (287.18) and 3-meter (294.30) diving events. The Terps were also paced by the senior leadership of Skalinskaya, who tallied wins in the 50 free (23.53) and 100 free (51.32). Maryland swept the 200 fly, via the finishes of Schimidt and Jen Vogel (first place/2:01.21) and Patti DeScenza (third place/2:05.38).
"We had swimmers swim well at critical times today," head coach Sean Schimmel said. "I am really proud how we stepped up and came together as a team to get the outcome we were looking for."
Maryland returns to competition Saturday at 1 p.m. when it heads to Morgantown, W.Va. for a tilt with West Virginia University.
