COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The Maryland men's and women's swimming and diving teams began the 2009-10 season on a high note Friday, defeating Johns Hopkins in its season opener at Eppley Natatorium.
The women's squad topped the Blue Jays, 187-67. The Terps were led by Alisa Kurbatova, who qualified for the NCAA Regionals with a 266.25 in the 1-meter. Kurbatova has now etched her name as a qualifier in the all three diving events - 1-meter, 3-meter, and platform - at regionals.
The men picked up their first dual meet win of the year, 146.5-91.5.
"It was great to get this first dual meet in and prepare for our first real conference test tomorrow versus N.C. State and Duke," head coach Sean Schimmel said. "I think we did a good job of setting ourselves up for that meet with how they prepared and competed, even in off-races."
Maryland hosts N.C. State and Duke at 1 p.m. tomorrow at Eppley Natatorium.
