Maryland Quotes
On the game:
"We did a good job of doing what we had to do. I thought in the first half we didn't have the patience in our offense but that is normal when you're excited, so we were a little quick with our offense. We slowed down and were able to get really good looks in the second half. The thing that pleased me with our offense was that we were a very good passing team. We made the extra pass and gave guys the easy shot down the court."
On the freshmen:
"We need to be able to score. Last year we got away with not scoring inside and we have to be able to score inside. Both James and Jordan are going to be able to do that as time goes by. It is going to be inconsistent and is not going to be pretty all the time but those two guys worked well together when they were out there tonight, which is good to see. "
On rebounding:
"We didn't rebound well at all in the first half and we had to pick it up. I think those two guys (Williams and Padgett) helped us in the second half. We just weren't going for the ball in the first half. We are not the type of team that has a guy that is going to get 20 rebounds so we have to have team rebounding and each guy has to stick his face in there and get hit a little bit. That's just part of rebounding and you have to be able to do that. "
On Greivis Vasquez:
"Greivis is really a unique player in that his strength is 5 on 5. Greivis is a good player when all 10 guys are there and he knows how to play basketball. A couple of the passes he made in the second half were really good."
On Sean Mosley:
"I want him to shoot. Sean is too good of a player not to use that part of his game and he earned the right to shoot this year. This year he is healthy and he really worked this summer, took a lot of shots and is a better shooter. When he is open, he's got to shoot the ball to help us."
On the difference between being a freshman and a sophomore:
"I can still compare my game to last year because I still play help-side defense, get after loose balls and rebounds. But my confidence on my shot is a lot consistent; it's just working for me right now. Every time I get the ball and I'm open I'm going to shoot and I feel like every time I shoot it's going in."
On advice for Jordan Williams and James Padgett getting significant minutes as freshmen:
"Just come out and work as hard as you can on both ends of the court. Grab every loose ball and rebound and that's how you'll get you minutes."
On the role of the two freshmen:
"They played really well today... They played extremely hard. You can see when you see those guys face-to-face they are winners. They want to do well. They don't want to make mistakes. They're still young so to be honest, at this moment, I never thought these guys would be this good. And I'm impressed, I'm happy, I'm excited, and I'm looking forward to the whole season because we have some Maryland basketball going on here."
On the balanced scoring by the team tonight:
"To me scoring nine points or seven points and just getting a win is important to me. I'm not worried about me scoring 25 points or being the leading scorer. I'm worried about winning games... To me it's more important to average 10 assists a game and that will make me feel better because now I can play the role that I always wanted to play which is the point guard and at times I can play the two-guard. But I thought it was a great win and I'm happy personally and I'm sure everybody is happy about it."
On the poor first-half rebounding:
"That's just something that we need to work on. We're not a perfect team. We're not the biggest team. Last year we had a lot more fight than we do right now and we're just trying to get back to that."
On the rebounding adjustments for the second-half:
"Just noticing a difference, I don't think we really realized how bad we were doing in rebounding until somebody said something to us. Coach got on us about it... We paid attention to it and eventually everybody went after the ball."
Charleston Southern Quotes
Head Coach Barclay Radebaugh
On the game:
"I thought we competed well in the first half. In the second half, they wore us down a little bit with their size. We got really wild with the ball. We need to be a little bit more poised. Defensively, we didn't box out, we lost some cutters. We'll find some good out of this, and we'll find some things to work on, and we'll just get better."
On Maryland:
"Their experience showed and they put some new wrinkles in that were very, very effective. They understand how to cut hard, and they understand moving hard. Defensively, I thought they did a great job with the press. I thought we were well prepared for it, but their size and speed was a little different than what we are used to. They're going to have a really nice year. They are very well coached, obviously, by a hall of fame coach. It was a great learning experience for our team. Maryland is a first-class team and a first-class institution."
