COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland men's swimming and diving team plays host to intrastate rivals Towson and UMBC Saturday. The meet is slated to begin at 1 p.m. at Eppley Recreation Natatorium.
Due to a high volume of athletic events on the University of Maryland campus this weekend, fans may park in the Terrapin Trail Garage for $15. Heavy traffic is expected due to the football game so those attending the Maryland swimming and diving meet Saturday are encouraged to plan accordingly. Please note the interactive campus parking map at the top of this release for further information.
The Terrapin men are seeking their first win since dropping Johns Hopkins to kick off the 2009 season. Maryland's largely youth-laden team has been paced by Andrew Relihan and Mitch Challacombe. Relihan won the 200 back (1:50.79) and placed third in the 200 IM (1:54.83) versus North Carolina the Terps' last time out. Mitch Challacombe continues to be Maryland's top threat in the short free events, while freshman Nick Evans has joined seniors Brian Honore and Chris Rouchard to form a solid distance corps. Evans finished third against the Tar Heels in the 1000 free (9:38.98).
UMBC is 1-1 in limited competition so far in 2009. The Retrievers topped Rider to open up the season but fell in its last outing at Navy. Matt Mattingly picked up America East Conference Swimmer of the Week honors after winning the 100 breast and 200 IM versus Rider in mid-October.
Towson is still looking for its first dual meet win of the year after starting the year finishing sixth in the Potomac Relay Invitational in Washington D.C.
Following Saturday's tri-meet, Maryland welcomes William & Mary, Navy, Richmond, Mary Washington, Villanova, Towson, Drexel and Connecticut to College Park for the 2009 Terrapin Cup Thursday, Nov. 19 - Saturday, Nov. 21.
