Maryland Women's Tennis Falls to No. 30 Indiana, 6-1

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Maryland women's tennis team dropped a tough match against No. 30 Indiana, 6-1, Sunday afternoon at the Indiana University Tennis Center.

The Terps (0-2) opened play Sunday hot, jumping out to an early 1-0 lead over Indiana (5-0). Maryland took the doubles point with strong performances from the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles slots. At the No. 1 position, Michal Amir and Lisa Miller handily defeated Indiana opponents Alba Berdala and Katya Zapadalova, 8-3. The win gave the pair their ninth doubles victory on the 2008-2009 season.

The junior team of Eleanor Peters and Maggie MacKeever won a tight match at No. 2 doubles, edging out Sigrid Fischer and Myriam Sopel, 9-8 (5). In another highly contested match, Jordan Hanbrough and Julia Huschke battled against Lindsey Stuckey and Megan Matter, falling 9-8 (3).

Singles play did not find similar success for the Terrapins. The Hoosiers knotted the score at 1-1, as team captain Miller fell to Lindsey Stuckey, 6-1, 6-0. Indiana would take the lead on the afternoon, 2-1, on Sigrid Fisher's defeat of MacKeever, 6-1, 6-2.

The Hoosiers added to their match lead with quality outings as Charlotte Martin defeated Peters 7-6 (2), 6-2, and Berdala bested Karin Lundmark, 7-5, 6-2.

The Terps rounded out the day with gritty singles matches by Amir and Huschke. Huschke took the opening set against Matter, 6-2. Unfortunately, she dropped the second set, 6-2, before falling in the winner-take-all final set, 6-2. The senior co-captain Amir saw tiebreakers in both of her sets against reigning Big Ten Player of the Week, Zapadalova but was unable to pull out a victory, losing, 7-6 (1), 7-6 (8-6).

Despite the outcome on the courts, tight play was a theme throughout Sunday's matches. The Terrapins and Hoosiers went to tiebreakers in five sets, including three in singles play and two in doubles play.

The Terrapins return to the Tennis Center at College Park on Feb. 7 for their home opener against Columbia. Play begins at 10 a.m.
