COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland men's swimming and diving team set a pair of school records and picked up two NCAA B-cut times Wednesday on the opening day of the 2009 Atlantic Coast Swimming and Diving Championships at Eppley Recreation Center Natatorium.
The Terps started off with a sixth-place finish in the 200 medley relay as the team of Mitch Challacombe, Eric Cullen, Aleksander Damjanic and Andy Dilz touched the wall at 6:34.02. The feat broke the school record set by Dong Kim, Nick Cordes, Cullen and Dilz last season.
Maryland followed up with a seventh-place finish in the 800 free relay and smashed the previous school record set 20 years ago by six seconds. The squad of Damjanic, Brian Honore, Chris Rouchard, Sean Stewart registered Maryland's second NCAA B-cut time of the evening (6:34.02).
"I was really happy with how we swam tonight, especially when you look at an effort like we got from Mitch Challacombe (200 medley relay 22.48 split)," head coach Sean Schimmel said. "Swims like that really set us up for the remainder of the meet. I think we are in a good spot."
The Terps are currently tied for sixth with NC State with 50 points. Virginia and Georgia Tech split the relays and are first and second in team standings, respectively.
Action resumes tomorrow with preliminaries at 11 a.m.
