Profit, Williams Score for Terps in ACC Pentathlon

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Kiani Profit finished sixth and Chanel Williams placed seventh in their first-ever collegiate pentathlon competitions for the University of Maryland on Thursday during the first day of the Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships being hosted by Virginia Tech.
Profit scored 3,779 points and Williams finished with 3,779 points in the multi-event competition, the best pentathlon marks since the mid-1990s for the Terrapins. Their five team points in the event put the Terps in a tie for third in the team standings after the first of three days of events at the Rector Field House.
Maryland senior Katie Rogus finished 10th for the Terrapins in the pentathlon with 3,530 points.
Junior Liane Weber of Clemson won the pentathlon with 4,218 points after posting top-three finishes in four of the five events. Tiger teammate Patricia Mamona was second with 4,081 points, with Mattie Bethea of NC State in third at 3,934.
On the men's side, Maryland sophomore Zach Roth was in 13th place after the first day of the men's heptathlon. Roth had 2,473 points in the competition, which had four of the seven events on the opening day of the championships. Roth was also participating in his first combined event as a collegian for the Terrapins on Thursday.
Profit and Williams each earned provisional qualifying marks for the NCAA Indoor Nationals, to be held in March at the University of Arkansas. They also qualified for the ECAC Indoor Championships in early March.
Profit's best performance of the competition came in the final event of the day in the 800 meters. She ran 2:20.44 to place fourth and earn 818 points. Her best scoring event of the pentathlon came in the 60-meter hurdles, where her mark of 8.94 earned 922 points.
Williams, one of the top hurdlers in Terrapin history, was fifth in the 60-meter hurdles at 8.64 seconds, earning 987 points. Her long jump mark of 18-9.75 was fifth in the competition and 10th in Maryland history, earning 768 points.
Rogus scored 852 points for her mark of 9.28 in the 60-meter hurdles, with her time of 2:21.22 in the 800 meters placing her seventh for her top finish among the five events.
Clemson led the team standings after the first of three days of events at the ACC Indoor with 18 points. NC State was second with six and Virginia was tied for third with Maryland with five points.
Roth's best finish on Thursday came in the shot put, where he finished eighth with a mark of 38-6. The heptathlon competition had the 60-meter dash, long jump, shot put and high jump on the first day. The men will compete in the 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and 1,000-meter run on Friday.
The ACC Indoor Championships will run both Friday and Saturday at the Rector Field House at Virginia Tech.
