The University of Maryland softball team fell short against a pair of 2008 NCAA regional-qualifying teams Saturday during the second day of the Florida Atlantic Kick-Off Classic, losing 1-0 to Long Island and 8-0 to No. 5/8 Michigan in the FAU Softball Stadium.
The Terrapins and Blackbirds engaged in a pitchers' duel, as neither team managed more than two baserunners in a single inning. Senior Sarah Dooley (0-2) went the distance for the Terps against the Blackbirds, scattering four hits over seven innings while allowing just one earned run. The St. Louis, Mo., native struck out four and walked only one batter.
Senior infielder Breanna Shaw and sophomore Kerry Hickey contributed two hits apiece during Saturday's games for the Terps. Hickey now has hit safely in Maryland's first four games, opening the season by going 6-for-13 (.462) with one double and one RBI.
Long Island's Brynn Lewis batted in the game's lone run in the top of the second inning, and pitcher Jenny Giles earned the victory for the Blackbirds.
Later in the afternoon, Maryland fell to one of the nation's top teams, Michigan, in a five-inning affair. Hickey and Shaw hit consecutive singles during the top of the fourth inning to account for the Terps' best scoring opportunity. Hickey, Dooley and freshman Kendra Knight each had stints on the mound for the Terps against the Wolverines.
Jordan Taylor picked up the victory for Michigan, and Amanda Chidester knocked in four RBIs.
