Track and Field Team Makes Its Mark at Virginia Tech Elite Meet

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The women's team shined with a number of outstanding individual performances that began with a win in the distance medley relay and ended with a great run in the 4x400m relay. Both are top times for the program.
The women's distance medley relay got the momentum rolling at the start of the meet with time of 11:43.31 that placed them first.In winning the event, the group just missed the school record. Christina Nelson ran a strong leadoff 1200m leg (3:34.00), handing off the baton to Tolu Olugbemi who had a great 400m leg (56.35). Ashley Cromartie followed in the 800m (2:18.83), handing off to anchor Erin Matyus. Matyus secured the lead and finished strong to split 4:53.90 for the mile. She came back the next day in the open mile and qualified for the ECAC meet with a time of 4:59.26.
Sophomore Kiani Profit had a strong showing in all three of her events at the Virginia Tech Elite. She ran her best time to date in the 60m hurdles and placed 8th overall and 6th on Maryland's All-time list with a time of 8.74. She came back shortly after with her highest mark of 5-03.00 in the high jump which earned her the 9th position on the all-time list. Profit ended the meet with a 55.50 lead off leg for the 4x400m relay.
Michelle Fedrick claimed victory in the 400m dash with her career best time in this event. Fedrick competed well to finish the race with a time of 54.81 that placed her at 3rd on Maryland's All-time list. On the women's 4x400m relay, she came back to split 54.43 as the anchor. The relay time was 2nd at the meet and 3rd on Maryland's All-time list. With outstanding contributions from Kiani Profit, DeAnna Brown, and Tolu Olugbemi, the final time of 3:43.60 is the Terps' best in recent years.
Freshman DeAnna Brown ran her best times of 7.70 in the 60m and 24.90 in the 200m dash. She placed 8th All-Time in both events. Brown proved to be a strong addition to the 4x400m relay coming back with a strong split of 56.52.
On the men's side, Tommy Friscia had a breakout performance in the 800m run and ran his best time by 2 seconds while competing well all the way to the finish. With his time of 1:52.48, he moved into the 3rd spot on the all-time list.
Zack Ray performed well in the long jump, placing 8th with a mark of 23-04.50, while Mike Cator ran a solid race in the men's mile. His time of 4:13.71 earned him 5th place and qualified him for the IC4A competition.
Next week, the team will travel to the NY Armory where they will continue their efforts.
