Terrapins Toppled by No. 39 Hokies, 5-2

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Maryland women's tennis team was defeated Sunday afternoon at Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center as Virginia Tech rolled to a 5-2 victory. Maggie MacKeever and Oksana Krutiyenko both won their singles matches to put the Terps on the board.

Virginia Tech (7-3, 1-1) grabbed the first four points of the day to seal the match victory. After the taking the doubles point, Tech's Inga Beermann defeated Eleanor Peters, 7-5, 6-1, and Lisa Miller was bested by Holly Johnson at the No. 5 slot, 6-4, 6-1.

With Jessica Brouwer's win at No. 2 singles, Virginia Tech clinched the matched win over Maryland (2-8, 0-2) for their first ACC win of the season. Brouwer downed Karin Lundmark in straight sets, 7-6(4), 6-2.

Although the Hokies had already closed out the match, the Terrapins continued to battle. Maggie MacKeever won her match at No. 4 singles, defeating Courtney Rauscher, 6-4, 7-5.

Likewise, sophomore Oksana Krutiyenko battled to win over Abbey Walker, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4. The victory evened Krutiyenko's spring record at 3-3.

The Terps did not fair well in doubles competition either as Virginia swept the three matches behind strong performances at each of the three spots. The win by Brouwer and Holly over Miller and MacKeever, 8-4, clinched the point for the Hokies.

Maryland returns to its home court on Friday, March 6 for a non-conference match-up against West Virginia.
