DELAND, Fla. - The University of Maryland softball team's game against Kentucky scheduled for Sunday morning has been cancelled due to inclement weather.
The Terrapins conclude the Stetson University Hatter Classic with a 3-1 record, having beaten Centenary College twice and tournament host Stetson once. Maryland tied its season-best run total during Friday afternoon's 8-3 win over Centenary College, and the Terps' pitching staff posted its first shutout of the season during Saturday evening's rematch, a 3-0 victory.
Senior Breanna Shaw swung a hot bat throughout the Hatter Classic, hitting at a .667 clip (8-for-12) with three runs and two RBIs. The Ellenwood, Ga., native tallied three multi-hit games during the Terps' four contests, raising her team leading batting average to .405. Sophomore Niki Lau added four hits, two runs and two RBIs during the quartet of games.
Sophomore Kerry Hickey earned all three Maryland's victories on the mound to improve her overall record to 5-2. The right-hander from Huntingtown, Md., pitched 14.1 innings during the Hatter Classic, allowing just four earned runs while striking out 14 to lower her team-leading ERA to 2.40. Senior Sarah Dooley added a pair of saves for the Terps.
The Terrapins (6-9) return to action Saturday when they play host to the Maryland Round Robin in Robert E. Taylor Stadium. The two-day, home-opening tournament pits Maryland against Dartmouth, Manhattan and Gardner-Webb. The Terps open the Maryland Round Robin by taking on Dartmouth at noon Saturday followed by a matchup with Manhattan at 2 p.m. Each home game is free and open to the public.
