Terps Have Top Finishes at Shamrock Invitational

CONWAY, S.C. - Chanel Williams, Christina Nelson, Ashley Williams and Kristen Batts each won their events this weekend to highlight University of Maryland performances at the Shamrock Invitational track and field meet hosted by Coastal Carolina.
Competing for the Terps in the 400 meter hurdles, Chanel Williams placed first posting a NCAA Regional qualifying time of 1:00.53. Kiani Profit followed in third place in 1:01.24, with Katie Rogus in 11th.
The event marked the opening of the outdoor track and field season for the Terrapins.
Christina Nelson placed first in the 1500 meter run in 4:38.47 with Erin Matyus following in second place with 4:39.11. Ashley Cromartie finished in ninth place.
In the Women's 100 Meter Dash, DeAnna Brown placed fourth with a time of 12.10 ahead of Heidi Paul who finished fifth and D'Ambour Lewis who followed at sixth. Paul and Lewis finished with respective times of 12.11 and 12.14.
Tolulope Olugbemi held down the 400 meters, running 58.67 while Kelly Pry, Michelle Fedrick, and Nicole Banker competed in the 800 meter run. Pry placed third with a time of 2:13.72, Fedrick's 2:15.34 placed her at fifth and Banker ran 2:19.38 to finish in 11th place.
The 4x400 team consisting of DeAnna Brown, Tolulope Olugbemi, Kelly Pry and Nicole Banker placed first running 3:45.65.
Ashley Williams placed first in the shot put posting a mark of 45-03.50 while Kristen Batts dominated the discus throw posting a 150-11 mark.
Saturday's highlight on the men's side came with Alex Lundy placing first in the 5000 meter run in 14:47.45. Kevin Gahr ran 15:18.58 to place him at fourth. In the 4x800 meter relay, Tommy Friscia, Jeremy Samuels, Max Bruno and Anthony Walker contributed to the second place finish running 7:45.40.
Jason Allen had a second-place finish, going 23-11.75 to place second in the men's long jump. Zach Ray joined Allen finishing not too far behind in fourth place.
On Friday, Ashley Williams placed second in the hammer throw posting a 173-03 mark. Jessie Echard placed seventh throwing 153-04, with Kristen Batts placing eighth with a 151-05 mark.
In the long jump, Chanel Williams also placed second in the event jumping 18-10.00. The Terps placed first in the 4x800 meter relay, finishing in 9:04.73. Erin Matyus, Christina Nelson, Nicole Banker and Kelly Pry competed in the event.
Lindsay Ritchings had a strong finish in the women's 5000 meter run, with a second place finish with a time of 17:30.92.
Navy Invitational
ANNAPOLIS, Md.- The lady Terps also competed at this weekend's US Naval Academy Invite. Brittany Lee Richardson won the 100m and 200m races.
In her return after knee surgery, Tiffani Long jumped 17"10 for the victory in the long jump. Melissa Mark finished third in the 1500m with a time of 4:48.20 and placed second in the 800m.
The Terps are set to host the Maryland Invitational on Saturday at the Kehoe Track Complex. The first event will begin at 10 a.m.
