RALEIGH, N.C. - The Maryland women's tennis team won its first Atlantic Coast Conference match of the season in dramatic fashion, upending NC State, 4-3, Sunday.
Trailing 3-2 on the team scoreboard, the Terrapins got singles wins from Karin Lundmark and Lisa Miller to secure the victory over the Wolfpack (4-11, 1-4).
Lundmark defeated Daria Petrovic 7-5, 6-1 at No. 3 singles before Miller clinched the victory with a 7-6 (4), 7-5 win over Diana Mortlock at the No. 5 position.
"It was a classic match," Head Coach Martin Novak said on Miller's victory. "You could see how she competed she composed her herself and really fought to the victory. As a team captain he has been pushing everyone this year and it was great to she her win in this fashion."
The Terps (4-11, 1-4) looked to be in trouble after dropping the doubles point. NC State's Neils Barringer and Pender Sessoms clinched the point with an 8-6 win over Jordan Hansbrough and Eleanor Peters at No. 3 doubles.
But Hansbrough bounced right back with a convincing 6-2, 6-0 win over Sessoms at No. 6 singles, evening the match at 1-all.
Maggie MacKeever also had a key singles win for the Terps. MacKeever's 6-3, 6-1 triumph over Barringer at the No. 4 position tied the match at 2-2.
"It was a strong performance and we played a solid, sound game of tennis," said Novak. "That is what it takes to win in the ACC."
The Terps are back in action at 3 p.m. Friday when they play host to No. 7 Duke.
