
Women's Tennis Falls to No. 18 North Carolina

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Facing yet another highly ranked ACC opponent, the Maryland women's tennis team was defeated 7-0, Sunday afternoon by No. 18 North Carolina at the Tennis Center at College Park. The Tar Heels clinched the match with Austin Smith's win at No. 3 singles.
A loaded team with five seniors and five nationally ranked singles players, North Carolina (14-6, 3-2) was in control from start to finish, winning all six singles matches along with the doubles point.
The Tar Heels top ranked player, No. 53 Sanaz Marand, defeated Maryland (4-13, 1-6) senior Michal Amir 6-1, 6-1, while Lisa Miller fell to No. 86 Sophie Grabinski. The win by Grabinski, 6-1, 6-0, gave Carolina a 3-0 lead on the team scoreboard.
Smith sealed the victory for the Heels as she bested Maggie MacKeever 6-1, 6-3, at No. 3 singles.
North Carolina earned the early point in doubles play, winning from both the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. The nation's fourth-ranked doubles team of Grabinski and Murand dispatched of Eleanor Peters and Jordan Hansbrough, 8-3, at the No. 2 slot.
The Terrapin twosome of Amir and Julia Huschke won at No. 3 doubles, downing Laura Reichert and Jelena Durisic, 8-5.
The Terps continue in ACC play with a road trip to take on Clemson on Saturday, April 4 and Georgia Tech on Sunday, April 5.
