COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland softball program is proud to offer three summer camps during the month of July, providing youth of all ages the unique opportunity to hone their softball skills under the guidance and expertise of Terrapin personnel.
The Maryland Pitching/Catching Camp will take place July 13-15 followed by the Maryland All Skills Camp July 20-23 and the Maryland Junior Terp Camp July 27-30. Intended for softball enthusiasts age 6-18, the camps will feature instruction from Terrapin coaches, players and various guests from within collegiate softball. The Maryland softball program's state-of-the-art venue, the Robert E. Taylor Softball Complex, will be the site of each camp.
"We are excited to have the opportunity to offer our summer softball camps," said Maryland head softball coach Laura Watten, who has compiled 439 victories during her 12-year collegiate coaching career. "These camps enable my staff, my players and I to connect with the community and share our passion for the game we love."
The Pitching/Catching Camp will divide campers into groups depending on position of emphasis and skill level. Whereas beginners will receive instruction regarding the basics of pitching mechanics, more advanced pitchers will progress to mastering more complex pitches. The catcher's clinic will cover proper stance footwork behind the plate, throwing ability, pickoffs and much more.
Geared toward young people of all skill levels and positions, the All Skills Camp will emphasize fundamentals in all aspects of the game - hitting, bunting, pitching, catching, infield and outfield play, base-running and game competition. Campers will be divided according to age and skill level to ensure an appropriate learning environment for each participant. The four-day camp includes instruction, lunch and a souvenir camp T-shirt.
The Junior Terp Camp aims to develop and expand fundamental skills from all parts of the game to help campers build a solid foundation. Stressing proper warm-up techniques, throwing and receiving fundamentals, fielding mechanics, base-running and hitting, the camp will introduce softball to young people in a fun, educational manner. Lunch will be provided to campers.
