COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Virginia Tech Hokies' baseball team defeated Maryland, 5-0, Sunday afternoon at Shipley Field, completing a three-game sweep of the Terps.
Maryland starting pitcher Brett Jones delivered a solid outing, allowing only two runs in five innings, but the Terps' bats were shut out for the first time this season, stranding 11 runners on base.
The Hokies (21-12, 7-10 ACC) scored a run in the top of the first on a Jones wild pitch and scored another in the fifth on an RBI single by catcher Anthony Sosnoskie.
Virginia Tech added three more in the seventh, with two coming via a two-run single by center fielder Steve Bumbry.
The Terps (15-20, 4-14 ACC) threatened in the seventh, loading the bases with no outs. However, a shallow fly-out and a double play ended the rally.
Starting pitcher Mathew Price earned the win for Virginia Tech, allowing three hits in six innings with six strikeouts to improve to 3-1 on the season. Jones got the loss, falling to 0-1, but set a new career high with five strikeouts.
Ben Rowen pitched the final 2 2/3 innings to record his second save of the season.
Maryland returns to Shipley Field Tuesday for a7 p.m. matchup with Mount Saint Mary's.
