COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Senior Sarah Dooley tossed 10 scoreless innings and sophomore Jennifer Anderson blasted a game-winning home run to lead the University of Maryland softball team to a doubleheader sweep of George Washington Tuesday in Robert E. Taylor Stadium. The Terrapins claimed a 2-0 victory in game one and outlasted the Colonials, 2-1, during the nightcap.

Dooley pitched a three-hit shutout during Tuesday's first contest, blanking an opponent for the third time this season and the 10th time of her career, good for sixth in team history. The veteran right-hander from St. Louis struck out five and did not allow a runner to reach third base until the seventh inning. Dooley (14-9) returned to the pitching circle to start game two, contributing three more scoreless frames.

Anderson, a catcher who also hails from St. Louis, broke a 1-1 tie during the fourth inning of game two by driving George Washington pitcher Heidi Penna's offering over the fence in left center field. The solo shot, which proved to be the game-winner, capped a strong performance by Anderson, who also singled, walked and threw out a would-be base stealer at second during the contest.

Like Anderson, freshman Vangie Galindo was perfect at the plate during Tuesday's second game, tallying three singles. Junior Alex Schultz accounted for Maryland's other RBI with her team-best third sacrifice fly of the season. Sophomore Kerry Hickey (12-8) claimed the victory in game two after pitching four strong innings in relief of Dooley. The right-hander from Huntingtown, Md., allowed just one earned run while striking out the side in both the fourth and sixth innings.

By claiming a pair of victories over George Washington, Maryland (27-23, 9-9 Atlantic Coast Conference) improved to 5-0 this season against local opponents, having also defeated Howard, Mount St. Mary's and Towson. The Terps now have won seven of their last 10 games.

Maryland wasted little time producing a run during Tuesday's first game. Senior Devon Williams ripped a two-out single to center and advanced two bases on an error. The Terps' third baseman crossed home plate during the ensuing at bat when junior Lydia Fowler's fly ball to center field was mishandled.

The Terps tacked on an insurance run during their half of the fourth, thanks again in large part to Williams and Fowler. After Schultz drew a one-out walk, Williams was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. A throwing error committed by George Washington during Fowler's ensuing lineout to the pitcher enabled Schultz to cross home plate, providing the final margin of victory.

During the second half of the twin bill, Maryland struck in its first at bat, as freshman Kathy McLaughlin, Galindo and junior Nadine Blackie notched consecutive basehits to lead off the bottom of the first. One out later Schultz lifted a fly ball to medium-deep right field, sending Galindo home to score the game's first run.

After George Washington freshman Lauren Wilson tied the game with a solo homer to lead off the top of the fourth, Anderson countered by going deep with one out in the bottom of the inning. The blast marked her third of the season, as well as her second game-winning long-ball.

Maryland demonstrated its defensive prowess during both games Tuesday. The Terps equaled their season high by turning two double plays during the first game, and McLaughlin ended the contest by leaping to snare a line drive at shortstop for the final out.

Not to be outdone, several Terps contributed outstanding plays in the field during the nightcap as well. Schultz made a diving stop in the hole at second base during the second inning and hopped to her feet in time to throw out the runner at first. Williams snagged a liner at third base for the final out of the third inning to end a scoring threat by the Colonials (14-33, 4-16 Atlantic-10).

The Terrapins returns to action Wednesday by playing host to a doubleheader with Delaware State in Taylor Stadium. First pitch is slated for at 5 p.m. Both games are free to the public, and parking will be available in Lots 4B and 9B starting at 4 p.m.
