COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Martin Novak has resigned as Maryland's head women's tennis coach, director of athletics Deborah A. Yow announced Thursday.
Novak, who spent the last eight seasons in College Park, has been named the director of tennis at Trump National Golf Club in Washington, D.C.
"While Coach Novak will be missed, this is a special professional opportunity at one of the elite tennis clubs in the nation," Yow said. "His contribution will be remembered and appreciated. We wish him the very best."
Maryland was Novak's third stop as a collegiate head coach. He spent five seasons (1985-89) at the University of Arkansas, leading the Razorbacks to a pair of appearances in the Southwest Conference semifinals.
In 1990, he took over the coaching reins at Minnesota, where he led the Gophers to four NCAA Tournament appearances. He was named the 2000 Big Ten Coach of the Year after leading Minnesota to the conference tournament finals.
He posted a record of 126-118 in his 11 seasons with the Gophers and has a career mark of 264-271.
The Terps struggled this season, but Novak did lead the team to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances.
Maryland earned a spot in the 2005 NCAA Tournament, its first appearance on the national stage after a six-year hiatus. The Terps also made the NCAAs the following season.
In addition, the Terps had individual participants in the NCAA Tournament in five of his eight seasons.
