Sunday's Maryland Softball Game Rained Out

May 3, 2009

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland softball team's regular season finale scheduled for Sunday against No. 16/23 Georgia Tech has been cancelled due to rain.

The Terrapins resume action Friday at the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship in Raleigh, N.C. First round tournament pairings will be announced by the conference on Monday.

The 18th annual conference tournament will feature a single-elimination format and be played in NC State's Curtis and Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium. ACC Select will provide free streaming video for every game during the first two days of the tournament,

Winners of nine of its last 14 games, Maryland (29-25, 9-11 ACC) concludes the regular season with its highest conference victory total in 10 years, having claimed ACC series victories against Boston College, NC State, Virginia and Virginia Tech. The Terps are on the verge of collecting their fourth consecutive 30-win season under head coach Laura Watten.

Pitchers Sarah Dooley (16-10) and Kerry Hickey (12-9) give the Terps two pitchers with at least a dozen victories in a season for the first time since 2004. Senior Breanna Shaw (.326), junior Nadine Blackie (.304) and freshman Vangie Galindo (.300) each finished the regular season with batting averages of .300 or better, and freshman Michelle Takeda paced the squad with seven home runs and 24 RBIs.
