COLLEGE PARK, -
Head coach Sean Schimmel and the Maryland swimming and diving program has announced captains for the 2009-2010 season. Jen Vogel, Patty DeScenza, Chris Rouchard and Ryan Greene are poised to lead the Terps next season.
Vogel and DeScenza will serve their second consecutive term as captains of the women's team. As juniors last season, the pair excelled for the Terps in the pool, leading Maryland to a Terp Cup victory and a fifth-place finish in the ACC Championships. Vogel participated in three events in the NCAA Championships after winning the league title in the 200 fly. DeScenza also had a stellar campaign in 2008-09 while specializing in the fly events.
"Having Jen and Patty repeat as captains and for them being able to draw from their experience from the leading the team last year will only make us better," Schimmel said. "I know they will be more confident in challenging their teammates to get the best out of them and having two of our best athletes as team captains is really going to help guide the incoming freshman class."
DeScenza anticipates another strong showing for Maryland's women's squad.
"I am very excited to be re-elected as captain and to work with Jen, Ryan, and Chris," DeScenza said. "I think it's important for the Terps to build on last year's successes and get all of the new freshmen on board to achieve our team goals."
Rouchard and Greene were elected as captains for the men's squad. Rouchard, a distance specialist, secured the second-best times in the 500, 1000 and 1650 free for the Terps last season. Greene, who joins Rouchard part of the senior class in the upcoming season, is a three-year letterwinner for the Terps.
"Chris and Ryan have been leaders all year and that is one of the reasons why their teammates elected them to the position," Schimmel said. "They have such passion for this team and where we want to bring the program, I know they will do a great job leading the guys."
Rouchard looks forward to leading the Terps in the upcoming campaign.
"It's a real honor being named captain," Rouchard said. "We have a great group of guys on the team, and a lot more great guys coming in next year. We're building on everything we've been working on and it should be a strong year coming up for us."
Schimmel is in his second season at the helm of the Maryland swimming and diving program.
