COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Following its incredible run to a national championship in 2008, the Maryland men's soccer program has gathered the No. 2-ranked recruiting class in the nation for the 2009 season according to Soccer America and College Soccer News.
Maryland filled many of the holes left by graduation and the Major League Soccer draft with this year's ten-player recruiting class. The Terps added three NSCAA All-Americans, including two-time honorees Jordan Cyrus and Taylor Kemp. Incoming freshman London Woodberry also racked up NSCAA High School All-American accolades this season and serves as a member of the U.S. U-18 National team.
The class also has an international flair with the addition of Gonzalo Frechilla (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) and Widner Saint Cyr (Port Au Prince, Haiti).
"Collectively this group brings a great deal of talent, athleticism, and a competitive fiber that I know our fans will appreciate," head coach Sasho Cirovski said. "Individually, they bring a wealth of diverse skills and the infusion of this incoming group along with our strong and experienced returning group of players makes me very confident that we will be ready for the challenge of maintaining our competitive excellence. I can't wait to get them all on campus!"
Maryland opens up the 2009 campaign with a match against UCLA, which boasted the third-ranked recruiting class in the offseason, on Sept. 4 at Ludwig Field. Game time is slated for 8 p.m.
