Men's Hoop Plays Host to Longwood

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Maryland returns to Comcast Center on Tuesday to face a non-conference matchup with Longwood on Tuesday at 8 p.m. The Terrapins split a pair of games on the road last week, beating Boston College and losing in overtime at Wake Forest to run their record to 11-5 overall and 2-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Terps sit in fourth place in the league standings.

The game will be televised live regionally on Comcast SportsNet.

The matchup can also be heard across the Terrapin Sports Radio Network, including Baltimore flagships WJZ-FM (105.7), WJZ-AM (1300). In Washington, D.C., Tuesday's game will be heard on WJFK-FM (106.7). Pregame on the network begins at 7 p.m.

The matchup with the Lancers is the first in a three-game homestand for Maryland. It also marks the final non-conference game of the regular season for the Terps, as they end their schedule with 13 straight games against league teams. NC State (Jan. 23) and Miami (Jan. 26) come calling before the Terps hit the road again on Jan. 31 at Clemson. Maryland is 9-4 in non-conference games so far this year, including a 6-1 non-league mark at Comcast.

Senior guard Eric Hayes became the 48th player in Maryland history to hit the 1,000-point plateau in the game at Wake Forest. Hayes comes into tonight's game as one of the top 3-point shooters in the ACC, ranking 5th in 3-pointers per game (2.3) and 2nd in 3-PT percentage. His .474 percentage trails only Virginia's Sammy Zeglinski (.486). Hayes is also second in the league in assist-turnover ratio, with his 2.5 mark trailing only Duke's Jon Scheyeer (4.1).

Senior guard Greivis Vasquez continued his hot streak during the road trip. He averaged 23.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 8.0 assists during Maryland's split of two games last week. Vasquez scored a season-high 30 points in an 85-83 overtime loss at Wake Forest. It was his 7th straight game with at least 20 points or more, and he added a team-high 7 assists in the contest. Vasquez led Maryland with 17 points in a 73-57 win at Boston College, going 7-for-13 from the floor and adding 9 assists and two steals.

Vasquez now has 12 straight games in double-figure scoring and has raised his scoring average to 18.4 ppg, 3rd in the conference. He is among ACC leaders in points, assists, FT percentage, steals, assist-turnover ratio and minutes.

Senior forward Landon Milbourne has also stepped up his offensive production of late. Milbourne has scored in double figures in six straight games and in seven of his last eight. One of the top shooters in the ACC (.528 FG% ranks 7th), Milbourne is second on the team in scoring at 14.3 points per game. He has made 50 consecutive starts for the Terps over a two-year string.

Scouting The Lancers

Longwood, playing as a Division I independent, is 4-14 overall this season. The Lancers are in the midst of a seven-game road swing, including a 75-63 loss at South Dakota in their most recent outing on Jan. 12. Longwood's last win came on Jan. 9 in an 82-81 triumph at fellow D-1 independent Cal St. Bakersfield. Longwood has also played ACC opponents Virginia (85-72 loss on 11/13) and Virginia Tech (85-50 loss on 12/30).

Senior Dana Smith is the Lancers' leading scorer and rebounder this season. The team captain averages 16.4 points and 7.2 rebounds per game and has five double-doubles to his credit this season. Antwan Carter is the only other Longwood player averaging in double figures this season, scoring 14.2 points per game. He is second in rebounding behind Smith at 7.1 per game. Carter has come off the bench in all 18 Lancer games this year.
