Terps Play Host to Miami Tuesday

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland finishes its three-game homestand with a nationally televised game against Miami on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Terrapins come into the game tied with Virginia for first place in the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 3-1 league mark. Overall, the Terps are 13-5 after winning five of their last six and eight of their last 10.

The game will be televised by ESPNU, while Sunday's game at Clemson will be aired by Fox Sports Net (seen locally on Comcast SportsNet) starting at 5:30 p.m.

Both games can also be heard across the Terrapin Sports Radio Network, including Baltimore flagships WJZ-FM (105.7), WJZ-AM (1300).

In a convincing 88-64 victory over NC State in their last outing, the Terrapins put four players in double figures and held the Wolfpack to 36 percent shooting from the floor. Greivis Vasquez had 17 of his 19 points in the second half and Landon Milbourne added 18 points. Sean Mosley went 8-for-13 from the line en route to 13 points and Cliff Tucker had 11 points in just 17 minutes off the bench.

The victory came in the 1,000th game of Gary Williams' head-coaching career. He comes into tonight's game with a career mark of 638-262 during his 32 seasons. At Maryland, he is now 432-234 in his 21st season. Williams is currently sixth nationally among active NCAA Division I coaches in victories and is one of eight with at least 600 victories.

Milbourne comes into tonight's game needing just 48 points to become the 49th Terrapin in history to score 1,000 points. Eric Hayes already cracked the 1,000-point mark this season. Milbourne is averaging 16.8 points per game over his last eight games, all of which he's scored in double figures. He's hitting .561 from the floor over those eight games.

As a team, Maryland is among the nation's leaders in a number of categories. Through games of Jan. 21 (prior to Maryland's game with NC State), the Terrapins were 10th in the nation in scoring margin (+16.1 per game), 10th in field goal percentage defense (.374), 10th in assist-turnover ratio (1.41) and 12th in turnover margin (4.6 per game).

All five Maryland starters are among leaders in the ACC in some statistical category. Vasquez is among the top 10 in six different categories.

Scouting the Hurricanes

Miami comes into tonight's game with a 15-4 mark, including a 1-4 record in the league. The Hurricanes are 12th in the league standings and have lost three straight - at Virginia Tech, at Virginia and at home on Jan. 19 against Boston College. Miami comes into the matchup with the Terps after a week off and started the season with a 15-1 record.

Miami has three players averaging in double figures. Senior forward Dwayne Collins leads Miami in scoring (12.7 points per game) and rebounding (8.7 per game) and is hitting 60 percent from the floor. Senior guard James Dews averages 12.2 points per game and is one of the best shooters in the league, hitting 49 percent from the floor, including a 42 percent mark behind the 3-point arc. Sophomore guard Malcolm Grant averages 10.5 points per game.

Miami, which averages eight 3-pointers per game, has three players who have at least 38 treys this season (senior forward Adrian Thomas 41, Malcolm Grant 39, James Dews 38).

The Terrapins and Hurricanes split their two meetings last year, with each team winning at home. Prior to Maryland's 73-68 win at Comcast Center on Jan. 31, 2009 in the teams' most recent meeting, the Hurricanes had won four straight in the series.
