
Track Continues Strong Season

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland's track and field programs had a very strong weekend with the men winning four events at the Wesley A. Brown Navy Invitational and the women producing a very strong outing at the George Mason Patriot Games.
The Navy Invitational saw several Maryland athletes produce some of the best performances in Maryland history. Sophomore Zack Ray led the Terrapins by placing first in two events, the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.2 and the long jump with a mark of 22-9. Legonn Haskins finished second in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.27.
Da'Rel Scott continued his strong season, placing first in the 60-meter dash at 6.97, tying the seventh-best mark in school history. The time also qualified Scott for the IC4A meet. Maryland rounded out the top three with Jarenn Stewart and Dareem David finishing second and third at 7.02 and 7.11, respectively.
Senior Jeremy Samuels delivered in the 200-meter dash, winning the event with a time of 22.27. Right behind Samuels was David, who finished second in 22.47. Stewart rounded out the top five, finishing at 22.67.
The 800-meter run provided very impressive performances for the Terrapin men. Tommy Friscia placed second overall in the event with a time of 1:52.67. Greg Jubb placed fifth overall with a time of 1:53.94, seventh-best in school history. Both times also set IC4A qualifying marks.
Greg Kelsey placed second overall in the 3000-meter run with a time of 8:22.23, followed by Kyle Gaffney in fourth place, who set the eighth-best time in Maryland history at 8:25.23. Both runners qualified for the IC4A meet.
The 4x400-meter relay saw the Terrapin men place second overall at 3:20.18. The relay team was comprised of John Davenport, Dareem David, twin-brother Shawn David and Jeremy Samuels.
Maryland's women turned in a very solid all-around performance at the George Mason Invitational. The only first place finish of the day came in the 4x800-meter relay. Kiani Profit, Ashley Cromartie, Julie Fricke and Christina Nelson finished with a time of 9:08.72, second-best in Maryland history. Fricke also placed third overall in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:18.51.
Although the team only won one event on Saturday, they managed to take second place in five other events. Senior Natalie Goodman placed second overall in the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.78. Goodman also performed well in the 200-meter dash, finishing third overall at 25.95.
DeAnna Brown placed second in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.74. In the 1000-meter run, Christy Goldmann placed second with a time of 3:01.76. Erin Matyus and Ashley Cromartie also joined Goldmann in the top five. Matyus finished third in 3:03.10 and Cromartie finished fifth in 3:06.05. Ashley Campbell placed third overall in the mile with a time of 5:09.46.
The Terrapin women performed very well in field events on Saturday. Ashley Hendrix placed second in the long jump with a mark of 18-5. Promising freshman Moriah Young placed second in the weight throw with a mark of 51-10, good enough for tenth all-time in Maryland history. Young also placed fifth overall in the shot put with a mark of 40-8.75. Just behind Young in the weight throw was Kristen Batts, who finished third with a mark of 50-4. Lucile Cancre placed second in the high jump at 5-3, followed by Camila Nichols, whose mark of 5-1 was good enough for fifth place overall.
Maryland Notes:
Sam Wuest finished third in the high jump at 6-2.25. Chris Parker finished fifth in the 60-meter hurdles at 8.60. Joshua Finkle placed seventh in the mile at 4:21.98. Also in the mile, Mike Cator, Sumanth Kuppalli and Craig Morgan finished eleventh, twelfth and thirteenth, respectively. Max Bruno and Ben Diestel finished eleventh and thirteenth in the 800-meter run. Dwight Barbiasz did not compete in the high jump.
Danielle Karagannis placed sixth in the mile at 5:21.82. Tiffani Long finished sixth in the long jump at 17-3.5. Alexis Booker placed seventh in the 60-meter dash at 7.85. Anna Roth placed eighth in the 3000-meter run. Betsy Dempsey placed ninth in the high jump. Ashley Carbray placed ninth in the triple jump. Christina Nelson and Ashlyn Sinclair placed eighth and eleventh in the 500-meter dash. Andrea Rothschild, Angeli Sivaraman and Kerry Nisson placed ninth, tenth and twelfth in the mile, respectively. Nisson and Owoade Ayorinde placed tenth and fifteenth in the 800-meter run. Kiani Profit placed eleventh in the shot put. Heidi Paul finished eleventh in the 60-meter dash.
