On the game:
"Charleston is a very good basketball team and they didn't have to prove it tonight. They played against very good teams last year and I think now it is their turn. They have outstanding guards, their guards could play anywhere. We were very fortunate to win that game. Our players fought through a lot of adversity like throwing the ball away a couple of times and poor free-throw shooting. These were reasons we should not have won the game, and I am very proud of this team. This is a young team, we lost three great players, and College of Charleston is a very good basketball team. They beat North Carolina last year, so we look at this as a very big win. As soon as I saw Charleston on the schedule I knew we were in for a tough game. We are three weeks into practice so this is a very difficult situation, but I like the challenge. I know my team has to establish themselves one way or another throughout the season and we will see plenty of good teams coming up so we will find out how good we are."
On Pe'Shon Howard:
"Charleston did a very good job doubling; Pe'Shon got stuck a little bit but he did a good job recovering. He made a great shot; he was strong enough to make that shot. He never flinched, and that is hard to do as a freshman. He is a great point guard. I really trust him, and he has confidence in himself. He worked, he scored, and that is great for his confidence. He wanted to come to Maryland for a long time and he has got high goals for himself on the team."
On Cliff Tucker:
"Cliff did a very good job, he is as good an athlete as there in the ACC, and I think you will see more of that this year as we move forward in our season."
On Maryland's defensive play:
"As the game moved on we tried to stop their key shooters and we managed to do that pretty well."
On Maryland's free-throw struggle:
"Tonight we missed more than we should have early in the game. Missing free throws is contagious and we are working on it, that's all you can do. Last year we had three great shooters, you think I had anything to do with that? No way. We just have to work harder this year to improve in that area. It's a work in progress, so we will see as the season progresses. We weren't shooting the ball particularly well tonight, and we need guys that can finish, it was just unlucky tonight."
On his attitude before the game:
"I always feel excited before games, so I get to do what I'm going to do. But tonight I felt good. I felt loose, and I was excited about who we were playing. Again, I am always excited to play."
On his point production:
"I didn't carry the team, our team has a lot of weapons. When we struggle, we all pick each other up."
On the game-winning shot:
"You can see the smile on my face, it feels really good. The crowd was great and really into [the game]. It was a great game to get early in the season, but we have a long way to go."
On his role during the last play:
"I was supposed to get it inside to Jordan (Williams) off the pick, because the bigs were forcing the guards out. But the defenders did a good job of guarding him. Then I tried to get it off to Dino (Gregory), but they got up on him pretty well, and I couldn't get it off to anyone inside, so I was forced to take a tough shot. I did not hesitate, and I knew that in order to take that shot I had to be aggressive. I knew they were going to get on Jordan because he had a great second half, and I tried to split it on the play before and almost turned it over. I took the shot off instinct."
On the impact of his first two games of college career:
"I didn't expect that I would get this much [playing time], but it was what I hoped for. I try to get better every day. Yeah, I'm the kind of player who wants the ball at big moments like that, what player doesn't? I was excited to get to call on the play because when Coach (Williams) called a timeout I thought I wouldn't be able to [call the play]. But when he said I could call it, I thought `hey this could be fun', and I got a good shot off."
On guarding Andrew Goudelock:
"I told Coach (Williams) I wanted to guard him, because he was getting a lot of shots off. I just stepped up in the huddle and told him that's what I wanted to do. I guarded him until the end of the game because I think when I get in that mode and I'm playing good defense, I just need to keep going."
College of Charleston Head Coach Bobby Cremins
Opening Statement:
"It was a great game and I'm really proud of my kids. We put ourselves in the position to win the game. I give Maryland a lot of credit, they never gave up and (Pe'Shon) Howard made a great shot. (Andrew) Goudelock had a good look at the end and that is a shot that he can hit. We are feeling down because we thought we had a real chance to win the game. I am really proud of our guys because they didn't break and we hung in until the end. Maryland almost broke it open, but we didn't break. It was a great learning experience and a great honor to be here and play these guys."
On the high number of turnovers:
"We had a lot of sloppy play that caused a lot of turnovers. We lost our lead, but we fought back."
On Jordan Williams:
"He's tough and we knew that going into this game. It was a great learning experience to play against someone of his caliber."
On the play of Andrew Goudelock:
"He has great range. When he is on our team just plays better. For a stretch, he wasn't involved in our offense, but he started to hit his shots and we took a lead."
On Gary Williams:
"Gary Williams is something else. He can really coach that pressing defense. He is a stand-up guy and a great coach. I've known him for a long time and he is just a really great guy."
On playing an ACC opponent:
"I love the ACC. It's the greatest conference and always will be. It was a great honor to play in such a tough atmosphere against a great team."
On moving forward:
"We are looking forward to Holy Cross. We have to take this as a learning experience and move on. The kids are down, but I told them that it was a heck of a play to end the game. I also told them that it was a great game and we can really build on this."
