COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The Maryland swimming and diving team swept its biggest event of the fall with a pair of repeat championships in the Terp Cup, which wrapped up Saturday night at Eppley Recreation Natatorium.
The women's three-peat effort was led by individual wins from Ginny Glover (200 back - 1:56.02), Annie Fittin (100 free - 49.27), and Addison Koelle (200 fly - 1:59.73) during Saturday night's finals. Glover narrowly missed a school record in the 200 back. The Terrapin 400 free relay (Fittin, Jenni Roberts, Megan Lafferty, Glover) also touched the wall first (3:20.35), with a tremendous race, knocking off nearly seven seconds from its qualifying mark. The Terps finished the three-day event with 1065.5 points.
In addition to Maryland's four top finishes, the Terps picked up second place showings from Katie Hughes (200 back - 1:59.67), Lafferty (100 free - 49.30), Alexa Hamilton (2:13.31) and Meggie Schmidt (200 fly - 2:02.61). Other solid performances for the Terps included a fourth place showing from Ashley Cox in the 200 breast (2:18.92), who chopped nearly three seconds off her preliminary time.
The men were also solid across the board Saturday night en route to its second consecutive Terp Cup crown. Andrew Relihan took first in the 200 back (1:46.54) and Sean Stewart led a top three sweep in the 200 fly (1:49.55). Roger Dent (1:49.76) and Myles Poster (1:51.59) rounded out the top for the Terps with second and third place finishes, respectively.
Maryland placed a meet-high five athletes in the 200 fly `A' Final and also dominated the 200 back version, placing four in that top final. Brad Dillon (1:50.44), Andrew Fisher (1:50.73) and Matt Meserole (1:51.94) took fifth, sixth and eighth, respectively. Mitch Challacombe led the way for the Terps in the 100 free, touching the wall second (44.81). The Terps concluded the night with a second place finish in the 400 free relay as Challacombe, John Hauser, Jeff Winters, and Relihan racked up a time of 3:02.14.
"We were certainly extremely happy with some of the results that we got, not just from our top performers but really from top to bottom, the team performed well and got a lot of fast times," head coach Sean Schimmel said. "It feels great. We feel that we really set ourselves up well for the ACCs."
Following a training trip to Florida over the winter break, Maryland returns to competition when it plays host to Villanova, Pitt, and Penn State Jan. 14 -15.
