COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Head coach Sean Schimmel and the Maryland swimming and diving program are excited to announce the signing of 14 student-athletes to the 2011-2012 recruiting class, announced today.
On the women's side, Melanie Busch, Carolyn Fittin and Julia Kudryashova are expected to thrive in the freestyle and add depth to the fly, back and IMs as well.
"We have three sprinters, with Carolyn Fittin, Mel Busch and Julia Kudryashova, that not only have great freestyle speed, but Carolyn has a great fly and Mel will be rounding out the back and IMs," Schimmel, who is in his third season at the helm of the program, said. "These three are really going to help our already strong relays and sprinters."
In addition the Terps also landed distance specialists Kacie Ciampioli and Megan Zariello.
"Kacie Ciampioli and Megan Zariello will give us some much needed strength in the 500, 1000 and 1650, as well as the 400IM," Schimmel said. "This is an area that we have had some holes in our lineup and Kacie and Megan will fill those roles nicely. Kelly Carroll and Laura Flewelling will also compete for the Terps beginning in the fall of 2011, specializing in the breaststroke and IMs.
"Kelly Carroll and Laura Flewelling are both being very strong breaststrokers and IM'ers and will really add some depth to our breaststroke group," Schimmel said.
"For the women, it is just really exciting to have this depth of talent sign in the fall," Schimmel said. "I am looking for all of these ladies to come in and have a very competitive impact on our team, in both the ACC and the NCAA Championships."
With the signing of Kyle Madley and Charlie Rommel, the Terrapin men add stellar speed to the pool for 2011-2012 and beyond.
"We signed some great speed with Kyle Madley and Charlie Rommel," Schimmel said. "Kyle is very versatile and has the ability to swim the free, both fly events, and the 200 IM. This will certainly allow us to use his strengths and maximize our current team line giving us more ability to move athletes around. Charlie not only is a strong sprint 50 and 100 freestyler, but he is developing his fly as well.
Other signees Spencer Sterling and Andrew Blyskal bring talents in the fly and backstroke as well as the mid-distance free. David Speese will be called upon to help with the breaststroke and IM.
"Spencer will be a strong member of this fly group but also has great versatility swimming a great backstroke as well," Schimmel said. "Andrew Blyskal's specialty is backstroke and middle distance free. Andrew will certainly help fill some roles in the 100 and 200 backstroke also. David Speese's ability in the breaststroke and IMs will start to add some depth to our breaststroke group.
"I am really excited about how these five young men will bring their talents to this team as we continue to give this team the foundation it needs to rise up in the ACC," Schimmel said. "As with the women, I am looking to hold these men accountable and impact this team in a big way."
