COLLEGE PARK, MD. -
Junior forward Jasmyne Spencer became the first Maryland women's soccer player to earn NSCAA All-America honors since 1996 when she was selected to the fourth team by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
"This is more good news for Jasmyne, and for our program," said Maryland head coach Brian Pensky. "Jasmyne's standard is to always be alongside the best, and certainly this honor is an indication of that. It's also just one more instance of Maryland soccer now firmly being on the map, so to speak."
This is just the latest honor for Spencer, a Bay Shore, N.Y., native, who was selected to the All-Southeast Region first team for the second consecutive year earlier this week. Last month she was named to TopDrawerSoccer.com's Team of the Season Third Team. Earlier this season, Spencer became the first Terp field player to be named to the All-ACC first team in back-to-back seasons since Erin Taylor was selected in 1995 and 1996.
All of these honors come after another spectacular season for Spencer, who finished second on the Terrapin squad with 25 points on 10 goals and five assists. Her season started relatively slow for the speedster, registering one assist in the first two victories. Spencer scored her first goal of the year in the 3-1 victory at Tennessee and then had two more vs. Kennesaw State to earn MVP honors at the Lady Vol Classic. She then tallied assists in wins over Stony Brook and Delaware before scoring both goals in the Terps' 2-1 overtime win over George Mason. She picked up her first point in ACC play with an assist on Lydia Hastings' goal in a 3-2 win over Virginia. Spencer scored one of her team-leading four game-winning goals in a 1-0 victory over NC State. She followed that up with a career-high five points on two goals and an assist in the 4-0 shutout of Clemson. She also scored the game-winning goal in the 2-1 win over Florida State. In the NCAA Tournament, Spencer scored the game-tying goal just 21 seconds after High Point took a 1-0 lead in an eventual 4-1first round win for the Terps.
Spencer helped guide the Terps to an 18-2-3 record, a final regular season national ranked of No. 3, according to Soccer America, and the program's first-ever No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. She currently ranks among the Top 25 in career points (9th, 50), goals (8th, 20), assists (23rd, 10), shots (8th, 150) and game-winning goals (4th, 8) at Maryland.
Spencer joins Kelly Amonte (1993, second team) and Erin Taylor (1996, first team) as the only players in the program's history to earn NSCAA All-America honors.
