Maryland Head Coach Gary Williams
Opening statement:
"I'm very disappointed with the way we attacked Temple's defense early on. They did a good job of just packing it in and we weren't aggressive taking the ball to the basket even though they were packing it in. In other words, we knew they play that kind of defense so the way to attack, dribble penetrate, that type of thing, and we just didn't do it.
"We dug ourselves a pretty good hole in the first half, and then came out and played the same way to start the second half, so we subbed. Young guys came in and did a great job of flying around. I told the team after the game it doesn't have to be perfect you just have to play hard and those guys played hard so I was proud of them. They toughed it out and they could have won the game at the end but we didn't get it. You can't expect to come back 15 in the second half on a Temple team that's won the Atlantic 10 the past three years, picked to win the Atlantic 10 again this year. I'm just very disappointed. I'm just glad we can get to practice tomorrow and work on some things."
On the Temple defense:
"It was good. We struggled but once we got moving we were OK. We didn't have enough movement in our offense. We stood around when we got the ball to Jordan [Williams]. And they know how to play. [Temple Head] Coach [Fran] Dunphy does a good job and they know how to play. So we have to be more aggressive than we were, and when we were we could play and when we weren't aggressive we couldn't play. It doesn't really get more complicated than that."
On Jordan Williams:
He was great. There were some big people out there tonight. Especially in the first half he wasn't getting a lot of help, he got some help in the second half. But he did a good job with fouls. We got a couple plays where we could have won the game, a couple of free throws go in, a pass, but that's the way it goes. When you get behind that far you have to be pretty perfect to win the game."
On the rebounding:
"I don't expect to get out-rebounded. We just have to find a way to rebound. If we got out-rebounded tonight by 10 I guess it was, I think we could have rebounded better. Temple's a very good rebounding team, that's one of the things they do well. At the same time, I expect us to fight. There were periods where we fought, and we got our share of rebounds. There were times we didn't work the glass as hard as we should."
On going forward:
"We have to get better. We're not good enough offensively yet. Rebounding tonight we could have done better. We can't throw it in to Jordan [Williams] and watch him. That doesn't work. We need play like Pe'Shon [Howard] and Terrell [Stoglin] gave us tonight. We need guys to step up. They didn't do everything right but they certainly played with a great deal of intensity. Right now if we can get that out of everybody, we're a team that's going to have to play nine or 10 guys. That's the nature of this team. We don't have any first-round draft picks so we have to do something."
