COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women's tennis team, competing for the first time in two weeks, was unable to overcome a slow start in singles and fell to Boston College, 5-2, in the Atlantic Coast Conference opener for both programs.

With BC (3-4, 1-0) leading 3-1, Katarina Gajic defeated Maryland's Maggie MacKeever 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 singles to clinch the match.

Jordan Hansbrough and Burce Kurkan were victorious in singles for the Terps, both winning by identical 6-0, 6-4, margins.

Hansbrough downed Ina Kauppila at the No. 5 position and Kurkan gave the Terps (0-2, 0-1) their first point with a victory over Brittany Delaney at No. 6.

The hotly-contested doubles point proved to be the key to the match.

After splitting the first two doubles matches, MacKeever and Lisa Miller were edged 8-6 by Alex Kelleher and Olga Khmylev at the No. 1 position, giving Boston College the first point.

Had that doubles point gone the Terps way, Julia Huschke's No. 3 singles match, the final one of the day, may have been the clincher.

Huschke battled back after losing the opening set 6-0. She won the second set 6-4, but was edged in the pro set, 11-9.

"We did a good job competing,' head coach Howard Joffe said after the three-hour match. "It's disappointing to get beat, but this is just our second match of the season."

The Terps had three matches postponed last weekend due to the snow storms in the region.

Maryland goes back out of conference Sunday when it plays host to Rutgers in the Tennis Center at College Park. The match is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
