CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Maryland men's swimming and diving team started the 2010 Atlantic Coast Conference Championships with a stellar fourth-place showing in the 800 free relay Wednesday.
The 800 free relay team of Aleksandar Damjanic, Brian Honore, Andrew Relihan and Nick Evans took fourth in the event with a time of 6:31.77. The time tallied in as the Terps' first B-cut performance of the young championships and its first school-record of the meet. Maryland broke the previous 800 free relay record established only a year ago by Chris Rouchard, Sean Stewart, Honore and Damjanic at last year's ACC Championships held in College Park.
In other relay action, the squad of Mitch Challacombe, Jeff Winters, Ryan Greene and Damjanic took ninth in the 200 medley relay (1:30.36). Heading into day two of the championships, Maryland sits in eighth place, only two points-shy of Duke. A mere six points separates fourth-place Virginia Tech and the Terps.
The Terps return to action Thursday morning with preliminary swims in the 500 free, 200 IM and 50 free at 11 a.m.
